The most popular cartoon characters around the world, ‘Tom and Jerry’ and ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’, were actually the brainchild of Gene Deitch, who died on 16 April 2020. He was 95 years old.

Gene Deitch’s early life, which entertained people of all ages through his cartoon characters, was full of adventure. After completing his studies, he became a draftsman in North American Aviation. After this, he started training pilots in the army and remained attached to the army for a long time.

But in 1944, he suddenly had some health problems due to which he retired from the army job.

Gene, who was active in the field of aviation, tried his hand at animation after leaving the army job. He was so immersed in the field of animation that he soon gave birth to a cartoon character known by the world as Tom and Jerry. He was also active in films. He was nominated for four of Hollywood’s most respected Oscar awards for his excellent direction.

In 1961, Gene was also given an Oscar award for his film ‘Munro’.


Gene Deitch was born on August 8, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois. Deitche’s parents were salesmen named Joseph Deitch and Ruth Dion Deitch. Gene moved to California in 1929 with his family. He graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1942. Gene directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry, as well as a short series on Popeye the Sailor.
In the year 2004, Gene was awarded the Winsor McKay Award for his lifetime contribution to animation.

Deitch’s movie Munro won the Academy Award in the category of Best Animated Short Film in 1960. He was also nominated for the same award twice here in 1964 for the Whites Nudnik and How to Award Friendship.

Previously, he made the “Tom Terrific” series, while Sydney’s Family Tree, which he co-produced, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1958.
